Maximising the benefits of wetlands

Sir Peter Scott recognised both the importance of habitats and the role of people in saving threatened species

The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands was the first intergovernmental treaty on the conservation and wise use of wetlands. Much of the document was drafted at Slimbridge and WWT continues to play a vital role in Ramsar and in UN-led work on the benefits of wetlands.

Sir Peter Scott recognised both the importance of habitats and the role of people in saving threatened species. WWT works hard to demonstrate to people around the world how wetlands can help them too.Reedbed WWT copyright

WWT use the wetlands at each of its nine WWT wetland centres around the UK in a sustainable way. WWT provides the ideal environmental conditions for a wide range of wildlife, both common and rare, while providing somewhere for people to relax and learn. In turn, income generated from admissions supports WWT's conservation and research work.

Each WWT wetland centre also plays its part in reducing localised flooding, regulating temperature and carbon emissions and taking pollutants out of our water systems. WWT helps spread these principles around the world through its projects in Laos, Guyana and Nepal.
