WWT launches photographic competition

5 August 2007

Marsh FrogWhat does WWT mean to you? Perhaps it is the chance to see exciting and unusual species that you’ve never seen before, or the opportunity to wander through a relaxing environment away from the stresses of everyday life. Or maybe it is the chance to meet like-minded people at one of our many events.

WWT has now teamed up with leading photographic manufacturer Nikon to launch our first national photography competition. You are invited to send in photos showing us exactly what WWT means to you for the chance to win some amazing prizes.

If you have never visited a WWT centre before, this is the perfect reason to spend a few hours at one of our nine reserves and give us a fresh perspective on our wildlife, landscapes or people.

Click here for rules & regulations, and entry form.

The competition has three categories:

1. WWT Nikon Photo of the Year
The national winner of this category will walk away with a high performance Nikon D40 SLR kit with an AF-S Zoom-Nikkor 18-55mm lens and a 70-300mm AF-S VR lens featuring Nikon’s unique Silent Wave Motor, worth £850.

2. WWT Nikon Junior Photo of the Year
The national winner of this category will receive a top of the range 8.1 megapixel Nikon COOLPIX P3 digital camera, worth £350.

3. WWT Nikon Digiscoping Photo of the Year
The national winner of Digiscoping Photo of the year wins a Nikon Fieldscope ED 82mm which will come with a multi-coated eyepiece, worth £1,130.

In addition, the 27 shortlisted entries (one per category at each of our nine centres) will win a pair of Nikon Travelite EX compact binoculars, worth £109.99.

The only limitation is that photographs must be taken at one of our nine centres, each of which offers plenty of photo opportunities of not only the stunning wildlife, but also visitors enjoying the centres. (See our home page for details).

Step by step guide to entry

  • Visit a WWT centre and take your photographs. Alternatively, if you have visited a WWT centre within the last five years and already have good photos, these are eligible for entry.
  • A competition entry form will be available to download from this site or you will be able to collect one at any of our nine centres (ask at the admissions desk). Please make sure that you read the competition rules very carefully.
  • Return your entry form and photo(s) to your local centre. For example, if your nearest centre is Arundel, please return your images to Arundel, even if the images are taken at another centre. Mark entries to the ‘WWT Nikon Photography Competition’. Please note that any entries submitted can not be returned by WWT.
  • Look out for local displays of photographs at centres.
  • Make sure you send in all entries by the closing date, Monday 27th August 2007.
  • If your photograph is selected as a regional winner, your local centre will contact you at the beginning of September.
  • The 27 regional winning photographs will be submitted to London for a national judging which will take place in September.
  • If you have any questions please email photography.competition@wwt.org.uk. Please note that this address is for queries only, and not for submission of entries.

Hints from the judges

In addition to technical accomplishment, we are looking for variety, innovation and imagination. For example, your image might capture a special moment, depict specific behaviour or tell a story. It may feature a familiar iconic bird or insect, a frosty morning, or visitors enjoying a guided walk. Remember that we’re interested to know what WWT means to you, so focus on capturing the essence of that special and unique world.
