Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust (WWT)

There are lots of ideas for work at school and for the WWT centre visit. If you are unable to visit a WWT centre, the materials may be used around any suitable local pond work. The Scheme of Work duration is flexible depending on teacher and pupil needs.

Learning Objectives

Children will learn that:

• Ponds are wetland habitats.
• Ponds are wonderful. They have many uses and values to wildlife and people.
• Ponds are fragile and easily damaged by people.
• Many ponds are in trouble.
• We can all help to conserve ponds.

Feeling objectives

• Children can express positive feelings about ponds.
• Children feel ownership of their local ponds ans are motivated to conserve them.
• Teachers feel the same!

Behavioural objectives

• Children behave with respect towards ponds and pond life.
• Children participate in the Wetland Challenge Great Pond Survey.
• Children become advocates for ponds.
• Children continue to learn about and be engaged with ponds.
• Teachers infuse ponds/wetlands into Schemes of Work.

Please note: Due to high demand, at London Wetland Centre, Great Pond Safari will be 50 minute session. Self guided activities can be provided for teachers to extend the session themselves.
