Every year they fly thousands of miles between their wintering grounds in the UK and their summer breeding grounds in the arctic.
WWT has teamed up with a new BBC Radio 4 series World on the Move in a research first. Over the next year, we will follow three individual Greenland white-fronted geese, three Brent geese and three Barnacle geese as they make these epic journeys and compare how much fuel they need to complete them.
Six of our nine Top Geese have now reached their summer breeding grounds, but sadly we have lost satellite transmission from two of our Greenland white-fronted geese, 'Lightning' and 'Miles', and from one of our Light-bellied Brent geese, 'Geysir'. We do not know whether this means the transmitters have malfunctioned or somehow fallen off or if, sadly, the three have perished during their arduous journeys. If the birds are still alive, they will be identified by their leg rings if they return with the rest of the geese this autumn. Watch this space!
The fuel gauges for the remaining six will be updated from late August onwards once the birds start their return journeys. Click on the species names above to see each bird's exact location on our interactive maps, and watch this website closely as autumn approaches and our Top Geese start thinking about the return migration back to Britain.
Will they all make it back this autumn? Are the missing birds still alive?
Who will make it back first? Which one will be Top Goose?
