Lots of activity at the osprey nest

Yesterday morning I watched the female osprey sitting on the nest starting to re-arrange the sticks and the grassy tussocks now growing on the nest. She was flying around the nest site most of the morning then flew off returning with a fish at 3.15pm. A pair of crows were pestering her on the nest and she could not get peace to eat what looked like a trout so she flew to a nearby tree and started to eat it. Then at 4.27pm she flew back onto the nest with the remains of her fish and was followed closely by a ringed male osprey also carrying a fish. Again I was unable to see the darvic ring clearly, it was certainly on the left leg and could easily be the male bird we saw on Tuesday with a faded yellow ring which will be a Scottish ringed bird about 10 years old.

Today she has been on the nest most of the morning and has brought in sticks and clumps of moss and has totally transformed the look of the nest. She has also been nestling down forming a cup in the middle of the nest with her body, always a good sign. Just after 12 noon on the CCTV screen we could see tail feathers hanging down which must be another osprey siitting on the same branch holding the camera. Most likely it will be the male osprey but frustratingly at the moment I cannot identify him. Hopefully soon I can get a good look at the leg ring and see if our regular male, green AW is back or if we have a new male.

All exciting stuff as ever at this time of year in the osprey soap opera!
