“The future of the economy depends on our natural resources”, WWT’s Chief Executive Martin Spray CBE has told Government, and that “the pound in your pocket – and the entire economy - is dependent on a healthy natural environment”.

In a hard-hitting blog on the Guardian newspaper website, Martin Spray cited how wetlands can actually save us all money by providing us with free services, like cleaning our water and protecting us from flooding. He also met Environment Minister Lord de Mauley at a Westminster reception to discuss a report by environmental groups – including WWT – which assesses the Government’s environmental record. The reception was hosted by Zac Goldsmith who’s a member of the Commons Environmental Audit Committee, and MP for WWT’s London Wetland Centre.

The report found that out of 25 commitments it made to the environment, the Government was doing well on 4, moderately on 12, and failing on 9 – just over a third.
