Pink-foot Influx

A couple of days ago we pondered the possibility that the weather patterns over Iceland might encourage some Pink-footed Goose migration, well it did! An early morning count produced c700 birds but by midday over 5000 had arrived with the majority coming in skeins from high, indicating that these birds were new arrivals.

By late afternoon many birds had dispersed locally although among birds left on the reserve a single Barnacle Goose was found, the first of the autumn. Keep an eye open for neck collars and leg rings. A Greylag with an orange neck collar PPN unfortunately wasn't ringed in Iceland but at Windermere this summer.

Raptors in action included 5 Sparrowhawk, 3 Marsh Harrier, 5 Common Buzzard, 3 Kestrel and Peregrine.

Waders included Golden Plover, 500+ Lapwing, 36 Ruff, 30+ Common Snipe and 5 Black-tailed Godwit.
