WWT urges manifesto writers to think green

WWT is urging all political parties to take notice of a report published by MPs that says more needs to be done to protect our natural environment for future generations.

The report gives the present Government a ‘red card’ for policies that have failed to tackle flooding, protect biodiversity and reduce health-damaging air pollution. WWT was among the organisations who gave evidence to the MPs, on which the report was based.

The Committee recommends the next Government, regardless of political party, should adopt a wide-ranging environmental strategy overseen by a new ‘Office for Environmental Responsibility’.

WWT Head of Policy Jeff Knott said:

“This Government’s environmental plans were ambitious, but this report confirms they’ve often failed to deliver.

A good example were plans to reduce flooding through more green roofs and permeable surfaces. We welcomed the new law which was introduced in 2010, but four years later, it still hasn’t been implemented.

“Actions speak louder than words. Hopefully this report will help this and future governments recognise the long-term value of our natural environment, for people and nature, when making decisions.”

WWT Chief Executive Martin Spray appeared before the MPs' Environmental Audit Committee in July, to give evidence. He also sent a follow-up letter to the Chair, you can get a sneak look at it here: WWT-Martin-Spray-EAC-letter
