Recent sightings - 6th May

The following sightings were recorded today by Toni Castello, warden, near high tide.

Main lake – visible from Sensory garden and Visitor centre

Mallard 30, Tufted duck 14, Black-headed gull 120, Little egret 1, Pintail 1, Greylag 2.

Wadermarsh - visible from Brent Hide

Black-headed gull 3.

Freshwater lagoon – visible from Brent Hide and Crannog

Tufted duck 9, Gadwall 1, Black-headed gull 300, Mute swan 2, Coot 1, Mute swan 2 (religiously incubating the seven eggs), Pied wagtail 2 (a female feeding a juvenile; they have probably nested in the Crannog area, very discreetly ...).

Saline Lagoon - visible from Limekiln observatory

Black-headed gull 63.

Estuary – visible from Brent hide and Limekiln observatory

Black-headed gull +100, Oystercatcher +200, Shelduck 1, Herring gull 14. First day without any observations of Brent geese.

Peninsula marsh – visible from Limekiln observatory

Black-headed gull 1, Reed bunting 1 (hopefully we will have at least one pair nesting again this season), Sedge warbler 1 (a pair must be breeding in the area), Ringed plovers 1 (in nest), Wheatear 1 female (one more female and two males have been observed in the last few days; they could be thinking on nesting there!).

Brickworks

Linnet 3, Cormorant 1 (in flight), Lesser black-backed gull 1 (in flight, harassed by Black-headed gulls.
