Two Pectoral Sandpiper today out on Woodend Marsh viewed from the United Utilities Hide. First sightings for 7 days here. Quite possibly the same birds that have been present in the area since 16th September.
Three Whooper Swan back in again. We are assuming these are the same birds that turned up briefly on the 21st September, joining 4 over summering birds.
Similar counts to yesterday regarding the wildfowl although the first of the adult Shelduck returned today. Previously the only Shelduck on the reserve were a few juvenile birds.
Four Marsh Harrier again, 4+ Common Buzzard, 2 Kestrel, Sparrowhawk and a distant falcon chasing birds was thought to be a Merlin.
At least two Kingfisher sometimes showing well from the United Utilities Hide.
As usual it should be possible to see at least 50 species of bird in a day without too much effort, although a telescope is very useful from most of the hides.
If you are visiting the reserve, pop in to the in focus shop (next to the Discovery Hide) where we have a full list of birds, and should be able to point you in the right direction to get the most out of your visit.
