Colder still?

A very cold morning with even more ice around, drastically reducing the number of birds on show as many have made their way out to the river as the only unfrozen area nearby.

Rushy Hide & Peng Observatory

A total of 75 Bewick's Swans this morning including a new family with one cygnet, the pair being Lisa and Turva.  Pochard were notably down to just 24 birds this morning but Shelduck and Pintail are relatively unchanged.  There was no sign of the Mandarin this morning, but they may return for the evening feed.

Zeiss Hide

The Bittern was out on the ice this morning, see our tweet here.  Otherwise it was very quiet with just 70 Lapwing braving a completely frozen scrape.

Kingfisher Hide

A handful of Teal and a single Wigeon were making use of the only patch of open water around.  A Water Rail was feeding along the edge of the pool and the feeders are busy with 'garden' birds.

South Lake Hides

Again, mostly frozen but the deep lake has some open water which is full of duck, not least the Shoveler doing their spinning feeding routine.  A total of 104 White-fronted Geese roosted here last night and left at around 07:30am this morning, flying off towards the Tack Piece and our specially managed goose fields for a day's grazing.
