A bit chilly

South Lake Hides

A busy wader scrape this morning with 303 Black-tailed Godwits, 22 Avocet and 8 Ruff including a couple of great looking males starting to display.  A pair of Cranes (Bart and Ruby) were on the island this morning, possibly prospecting a nest site.  A Great Crested Grebe and 2 Little Grebe were on the deep lake with a few Tufted Duck and 6 Gadwall.

A small swarm of hirundines were feeding low over the deep lake, mainly made up of around 50 Sand Martin with at least 4 Swallows mixed in.

Summer Walkway

At least 9 Wheatear and 3 Whinchat were on the Mid Point fence at the end of the Summer Walkway, busy feeding across the Dumbles and perching up on the wall and fence.  A Grasshopper Warbler was reeling around the reedbed and a pair of Meadow Pipit were busy foraging too.

Rushy Hide & Peng Observatory

The Redhead Smew had a late start and was seen mid-morning on the top pond of the Rushy, presumably having been roosting on the causeway out of sight first thing.  Two Common Sandpiper were on the islands around the top pond too.  A total of 16 Avocet were on the scrape along with 2 Redshank and 54 Shelduck across the Rushy as a whole.

Zeiss Hide

A pair of Avocet, 2 Black-tailed Godwit, 44 Shelduck, 6 Shoveler and 12 Teal were the only birds of note on the scrape.  At least 2 Reed Warblers were singing from the reedbed in front of the hide.
