New Species

A change in the weather welcomed if you aren't so keen on the heat with fresh south-westerlies set in for the next few days.

New in today, or at least we assume so, a Wood Sandpiper present in the afternoon on Woodend Marsh from  the United Utilities Hide. Other waders include 20+ Avocet, 100+ Lapwing, 40+ Black-tailed Godwit, 10+ Oystercatcher, 6 Redshank and 2 Little Ringed Plover.

Raptors included Peregrine, 2+ Common Buzzard, Kestrel and Sparrowhawk.

Cuckoo seen again from the Janet Kear Hide, also Great-spotted Woodpecker there.

Three Common Tern on the Mere this afternoon.

Two new species of moth were added to the reserve list this week in ideal mothing condition (hot and humid).

Green Arches - Anaplectoides prasina

Marbled White Spot - Deltote pygarga

We have now recorded ~560 species of moth on the reserve.

If you are coming to the reserve tomorrow you can see the moth trap being opened at 10am next to the in focus shop.
