2010 has been declared the International Year of Biodiversity by the United Nations. Of course the conservation of biodiversity is a major focus of WWT's work each and every year - freshwater wetlands hold more than 40% of the world's known species including 12% of all animal species - but we are delighted that all sorts of organisations are coming together in 2010 to do something positive for biodiversity.
WWT is a world leader in championing, safeguarding and revitalising wetlands and wetland species in Britain and worldwide, and you can help.
Get involved and 'Do One Thing'
All of us can do something positive for biodiversity this year. WWT is supporting the UK's International Year of Biodiversity campaign to Do One Thing. Resolve to do something in the new year for biodiversity - if you're not sure what to do, we have some suggestions below. And when you do it, tell your friends and family about it to encourage them to do something too. If you have a twitter account, follow @wwtconservation and tell us what you're doing. Don't forget to follow @iybuk too!
Suggestions of things we can all do for International Year of Biodiversity:
...take part in the UK's wildest hide & seek
...build a wildlife pond in the garden
...connect the down pipe from the gutter to a water butt
...connect the overflow of the water butt to the pond
...watch a swan feed at a WWT Wetland Centre
...watch the morning flight of the geese
...volunteer at a WWT wetland centre
...adopt a bird
...remember wetland wildlife in your will
...and when you've made your pledge, spread the word: ![]()
The Wildlife Pledge 2010
2010 is not just the date of the UK General Election it is also International Year of Biodiversity.
A number of wildlife conservation organisations, including WWT, have therefore put together the Wildlife Pledge 2010. This aims to raise the profile of nature conservation amongst prospective parliamentary candidates and to identify potential wildlife champions that we can work with, if they are elected, to make the UK a better place for biodiversity in and beyond 2010. You can check on the green commitment of your prospective parliamentary candidates here: http://www.wildlifepledges2010.org.uk/
