Wetland wildlife

WWT has an essential role to play in the research of behaviour, health and populations of thousands of wetland species including rare plant life.

  • We provide vital habitats, gain greater understanding and raise awareness of the wildlife living in and around wetlands including swans, geese, ducks, flamingos, otters, beavers, water voles, dragonflies, frogs and rare plant life.
  • We monitor the migration, health and populations of waterbirds including the long term studies of Bewick’s and whooper swans, brent and barnacle geese.
  • We save globally threatened wildlife. To date, we have helped save more than 20 species including the Hawaiian goose (Nene) and the barnacle goose. Such successes provide the framework for countless ongoing and future conservation projects, such as saving the red-breasted goose and the lesser flamingo.
