Lesser Flamingos

Lesser Flamingos

Despite being the world’s most numerous flamingo, this bird is classified as 'near' threatened due to its lack of suitable breeding sites. lesser flock 1

One such site is the caustic salt-laden Lake Natron in Tanzania where around one million lesser flamingos attempt to breed every year in one of the most unforgiving environments.

Since so many of the population rely on one single site, its conservation is more vital and has been thrown into the spotlight in recent months by a current a proposal to build a soda ash mine by the lake which would extract salt from the water and could destroy the birds

As part of the Flamingo Specialist Group, WWT works to protect the species through research, monitoring and promoting international cooperation to conserve the habitat on which they depend.

chickThe lesser flamingos at Lake Natron are the subject of a visually stunning documentary film out in Cineworld cinemas from 25 September. Disneynature's first feature, The Crimson Wing, charts the life of a lesser flamingo from birth and follows their battle to thrive at Lake Natron.

And WWT played a major part in this film. Slimbridge played host to a patient camera crew back in 2007 who spent many painstaking hours capturing a chick hatching from a flamingo egg.

Today, visitors to WWT Slimbridge, WWT Martin Mere, WWT Washington and WWT National Wetland Centre Wales (Llanelli) can see flamingos in all their shades of pink, with Slimbridge actually being the only place in Europe where you can see all six species of flamingo in one place.
