Madagascar pochard

Madagascar pochard is possibly the world’s rarest bird. It is found at just one one small lake in the north of the country, where 20 individuals teeter on the brink of extinction.

WWT is working in partnership with the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust, The Peregrine Fund and the Madagascar Government to save this species. We have drawn up plans for a major conservation project to start in 2010.

But an expedition in July 2009 found the situation was worse than we feared. It was clear that emergency action was needed, and staff from WWT have flown to Madagascar to collect eggs during this year’s breeding season.

You can follow their progress on the WWT team pochard blog.
