Breadcrumbs

Champagne breakfast

At the hotel, the broods are progressing well.

Owen: “The first brood spent the whole day outside in their new tank today. Brood two is still indoors, and doing well. We are still unsure about the clutch of eggs – we remain hopeful, but we are not counting them yet.”

In July, we identified a promising site on which to build the conservation-breeding facility in 2010. There is a stream to provide water, and an attractive natural wetland nearby. The team revisited the site the other day and it’s clear, now that it is the end of the dry season, water will be issue: much of the wetland has disappeared and the stream has largely dried up. We are having to think carefully before making a final decision about where to build.

Nige and Sparky arrived back in the UK after a month of hard work. We stopped at a motorway service station on the way back from the airport and ordered the largest breakfast available. We’ve not had a bottle of champagne with a fry-up before, but for once it seemed justified!

Their return also means we’ve got a new batch of photos. Below are some shots by Martin showing the eggs being extracted from the second and third nests and carried carefully back to dry land.
