Nige, Sparky and Lance set off yesterday for the capital and made the 12-hour journey without any drama. (Leaving the trip until the day before their flight, and on Friday 13th, seemed an unwise bit of planning given our ‘luck’ on journeys so far.) Responsibility for the ducklings now rests firmly with Owen and Martin.
Owen: “The first brood is doing really well. They already weigh 150g – five times their hatch weight. We had split them into two groups of four in the indoor tanks, and today they had their first swim outdoors in their new pool. They loved it! We’ll bring them in again for the night, but they look so fit and healthy – they’re doing as well as we could have expected at this stage.
“We ‘candled’ the clutch of eggs [shining a light through them, to check on the ducklings inside] this evening. They are all still alive – but we remain concerned about them, given their rough ride out from the lake. We are monitoring them closely, and it’s a case of keeping our fingers crossed. We estimate they’ll hatch on Wednesday.”
