Away from the obvious excitement of securing the latest birds from the wild, the less glamorous job of building somewhere to put our precious broods has meant no rest for the team that remained at the hotel.
Sparky: “Preparing the aviary and the foundations for the outdoor tanks is tough work – the heat is a constant struggle, but the biggest problem is the simple lack of tools and materials. And everything is going more slowly than we’d hoped. But we completed the aviary yesterday – and put the roof netting on – ready for the outdoor tanks.
“We’ve arranged to have the tanks built in Tana. They are about three metres square and a metre deep – big enough to give a brood of ducklings space to move around, and for them to learn to dive. The first one has been delivered and is being welded into place – a hotel for ducklings within a hotel. The locals all think we’re crazy!”
