Wetlands and people

  • Pond-dipping at London Wetland CentreWe inspire people to take positive conservation action through learning about wetlands and their wildlife. Our nine visitor centres across theUK introduce over one million people a year to the wonders of wetlands and their wildlife, and the fragility of their existence.
  • We link and join up wetland centres worldwide as the coordinator of Wetland Link International (WLI), which has 300 members in over 60 countries from Singapore to Italy and from Hong Kong to Canada. We have helped develop many of these sites including the new Hong Kong WetlandPark.
  • We play a crucial role in influencing the systems and legislation that support long term conservation. For instance, WWT experts helped establish the Ramsar Convention for the protection of valuable global wetlands.
  • We work with communities around the world to help them make the most of existing wetlands and create new ones.
  • We create wetlands that work and are sustainable for people and wildlife using designs that specifically improve water quality, alleviate flooding, and provide food and vital incomes. For example, working with a small group of local people in Nepal to help them establish and manage a wetland area to provide a sustainable livelihood for their community.
