Branta bernicla

Light-bellied Brent Goose © Daniel Bergmann There are two subspecies of Branta bernicla which regularly occur in Great Britain and Ireland. The nominate race bernicla, known as Dark-bellied Brent Goose, is found at estuarine sites in eastern and southern England and southern Wales. The subspecies hrota, or Light-bellied Brent Goose, comprises four recognised biogeographical populations, two of which are found in the UK: the East Canadian High Arctic Light-bellied Brent Goose occurs primarily around Irish coasts, particularly in Northern Ireland, and the East Atlantic Light-bellied Brent Goose is found mainly at Lindisfarne, Northumberland.

The Goose & Swan Monitoring Programme (GSMP) monitors numbers and breeding success of geese and swans in the UK during the non-breeding season. GSMP is organised by WWT on behalf of WWT and JNCC.
