Three populations of Greylag Goose occur in the UK. The most abundant is the migratory population that breeds in Iceland, and winters predominantly in Scotland, with smaller numbers in northern England, Ireland, Norway and the Faroe Islands. Two sedentary populations also exist: the Northwest Scotland Greylag Goose is a small population that occurs on the Hebrides, the west coast Scottish mainland and in Sutherland and Caithness; the Re-established Greylag Goose occurs throughout much of Britain and Ireland, particularly in England and parts of southern and eastern Scotland. Both sedentary populations have expanded their ranges in Scotland in recent years and now overlap in some areas.

The Goose & Swan Monitoring Programme (GSMP) monitors numbers and breeding success of geese and swans in the UK during the non-breeding season. GSMP is organised by WWT on behalf of WWT and JNCC.
