Sir Peter Scott Sand Martin Appeal

Sir Peter Scott aspired to protect endangered species throughout the world. WWT’s challenge is to continue his work, and in 2009 we are trying to halt the decline of sand martins. These birds are listed as a species of European Concern (Category 3) and have declined significantly over recent years, partly due to the loss of nesting habitat.

Please help us to create a home for sand martins at Arundel

Our aim is to establish a sand martin breeding colony at WWT Arundel Wetland Centre on the site of the current Peter Scott hide.

For many years this hide has given our members and visitors the chance to see a fantastic array of flora and fauna. However, after nearly 30 years, despite continued maintenance by centre staff, the hide is starting to disintegrate and subside.

Sir Peter Scott’s centenary year is an ideal opportunity to create a new hide flanked by artificial nesting banks for sand martins. It will provide unparalleled close access to a breeding sand martin colony, without any risk of disturbance to the birds.

The artificial banks will allow the sand martins to breed in nesting chambers that will not erode or become infested by parasites. Wherever possible, we will recycle materials from the old hide. For example, some of the crushed concrete from the old structure will be used to top the roof of the new hide, forming a shingle habitat for invertebrates and terns.

By providing a purpose built habitat, WWT hopes to increase sand martin numbers and halt the decline of these amazing spring migrants.

How you can help

WWT started fundraising for this project earlier in the year, and in fact some ground work has already started. However, in order to complete it by April we desperately need to raise a final £30,000.

Please give a donation of any size to help us create a colony for sand martins and a wonderful means of viewing them.
