The entire 27,000-strong population of Svalbard Barnacle geese winters on Scotland's Solway Firth, with thousands feeding at WWT's Caerlaverock Wetland Centre.
In the late 1940's there were no more than 300 Svalbard Barnacle geese. Just 60 years later this amazing population increase is a stunning example of WWT conservation in action. But sadly there are fears that this wonderful achievement could be easily undermined by the potential effects of global warming.
Top Goose
WWT has teamed up with BBC Radio 4's World on the Move in a research first. This year, we are following three individual Greenland white-fronted geese, three Brent geese and three Barnacle geese as they make their epic migrations and compare how much fuel they need to complete them.
Which one will get their first? Will they all make it? Which one will be Top Goose?
Find out how our Top Geese are getting on, read the Barnacle geese diary.
