Research into the threats to our migratory birds is vital to ensure their survival. Please help WWT save them from the many hazards they face.

Protecting our wild birds

Bewick's SwanWith winter fast approaching, thousands of birds from Iceland, Siberian Russia, Canada and Scandinavia are migrating to a warmer climate to overwinter at WWT Centres around the UK.

For over 60 years WWT has been trying to minimise the threats to many migratory birds such as Bewick's and Whooper swans, Barnacle, Pink-footed and Light-bellied Brent Geese.

The annual migration is arduous and fraught with dangers from the minute they leave their breeding grounds to the time they arrive. They face many threats from illegal hunting, collisions with wind farms, climate change, pollution and habitat loss. They are exhausted and hungry, and in some cases have lost up to a quarter of their body weight.

Research into the threats to our wild birds takes time and needs funding, but without it WWT would not be able to ensure their survival.

How you can help

In order for our scientists to continue their research, we desperately need to raise £40,000, to enable us to support these wonderful birds and to safeguard their future. Every donation counts, so please support us today.
