World Wetlands Day

Wetlands2 February each year is celebrated as World Wetlands Day. It marks the anniversary of the adoption of the international Convention on Wetlands on 2 February 1971. Since then over a thousand wetlands have been protected by governments under the 'Ramsar' convention.

World Wetlands Day is WWT's opportunity to celebrate wetlands and our work. And it is a chance to introduce more people to the wonder of wetlands.

The Convention on Wetlands, usually called the Ramsar Convention after the city in Iran where it was signed, covers all aspects of wetland conservation for biodiversity and for human use.

The main aim of the Ramsar Convention is the sustainable use of wetlands. As a showcase, the Convention lists Wetlands of International Importance, such as the Severn Estuary and Martin Mere.
