30 January 2010
People were out and about today making the most of the sunny but chilly conditions. We are still in the heart of classic winter birding with the reserve packed to the brim with Ducks, Geese, and Swans.
A good 7000 Pink-footed Geese roosting on the reserve but also flying in and out during the day. A hybrid Snow type Goose was spotted among them. Whooper Swan numbers are still high with at least 1500 birds. No reports of Bewick's but I would be surprised if the odd pair were not present.
The Green-Winged Teal continues to show well from the Hale Hide and has been present for the last two days as well.
Great condition of the local Common Buzzards with 7 birds seen, also Sparrowhawk and Kestrel. Good to see Barn Owl hunting from 5 pm onwards.
