Digiscoping is a fairly new way of taking good quality photographs of wildlife at long range. By combining a telescope with a compact digital camera some quite stunning images of wildlife can be obtained. This means that instead of lugging an SLR camera around with a large lens and a telescope, you can simply attach a compact camera to your telescope. Each telescope manufacture will have their own adaptations to fit the camera to your telescope.
Here at WWT Slimbridge our Reserve Wardens use:
- Swarovski HD65 scope with a 30xW eyepiece
- Swarovski ACB-A camera adaptor
The camera is down to personal choice as over 500 fit the Swarovski adaptor, but one with a zoom of no more than 4 times optical and an image stabiliser is recommended.
Most digital cameras also have a video mode and as long as you are using the right adaptor you can achieve some excellent results.
WWT Slimbridge Warden, James Lees has been digiscoping wildlife on the reserve and the results can be seen here.
