Occasionally, during the winter months, the A1101 between Welney village and Suspension bridge is flooded. This flooding can also affect access to some parts of the reserve. At these times, regular updates will be posted on the website. In times when there is no flooding, no further notice will be posted. If you are unsure about the current conditions, or would like further information, please call the centre on 01353 860711 before you leave home.

Facilities

WWT Welney's visitor centre has all you need to make a great day out, with cafe and gift shop on site, as well as baby changing and disabled access facilities. There is also free Wi-fi in the visitor centre which you are able to use.

Terms of entry

Visitors are asked to respect the habitats and wildlife of WWT Welney Wetland Centre by keeping to the paths at all times and not causing undue noise which may cause stress to birds and animals. For this reason, we kindly ask that bikes, scooters and ball games are left with us at reception to look after; and it is especially important to remain quiet in the bird viewing hides.

No dogs are permitted on site, other than trained assistance dogs (i.e. guide dogs).

Photography is permitted on site providing it is for personal use only. All commercial/stock library photography must be agreed in advance with the centre and is subject to a fee.  We have a photography basement which is available for use during the winter wildfowl season for low-level photography of birds and landscapes.  It is £30 per person per day to hire and needs to be booked prior to visiting - click here for more information.

Please don’t feed our birds, especially with bread – they will eat it but, in time, it will make them poorly.

Please don't bring your own pond-dipping equipment, you will not be allowed to use it on site as we cannot risk introducing diseases or invasive species to our delicate ecosystem.  All equipment for pond-dipping at the designated stations on the reserve is provided so that you can enjoy this activity.

Occasionally, the A1101 between Welney Village and Suspension Bridge floods and is closed to cars. Under such circumstances, access to WWT Welney is always possible from Ely or Downham Market, off the A10. Under exceptional circumstances, WWT reserve the right to cancel an evening floodlit feed to due to severe weather or, for example, a power cut.
