Join the WWT Slimbridge reserve team and our friends from Wader Quest for a fantastic weekend packed with events and activities to celebrate our wading birds.
High Tide Safari – (Saturday at 10:30am (sold out) and Sunday at 11am) Join our reserve team and go off the beaten track for an extra special Land Rover Safari, in search of roosting waders along the River Severn at high tide. (£5 per person).

Bird Watching Morning - Wader Special – (Saturday, 7:30am - 10am and Sunday, 8am – 10:30am) Join our Warden for an early morning first look at our wading birds. Take advantage of the expert company and learn how to identify birds from their seasonal plumage. Then head back to Kingfisher Kitchen for breakfast, ready for the opening of the Severn Wader Festival and a day of activities. (£15.95 per person, including breakfast)
Meet the Birds of Wader Shore – (Saturday and Sunday at 2pm) See avocet, ruff and redshank up close at our Wader Shore exhibit. Learn more about these amazing birds with the help of our team of expert volunteers. (Free with admission, no booking necessary).
Meet the Experts – Join wader experts from across the UK in our cinema to discover more about these amazing birds through a series of short talks. Bitesized talks lasting around 45 minutes each. (Free with admission, no booking necessary):
- Saturday 9th September, 2pm – An Inspiration of Waders with Wader Quest
- Saturday 9th September, 3pm – Black-tailed Godwits with Jenny Gill
- Sunday 10th September, 2pm – A Deceit of Lapwings with Wader Quest
- Sunday 10th September, 3pm – Spoon-billed Sandpipers with WWT
Guides in Hides – (Saturday and Sunday at 11am – 3pm) Head out on to the reserve and meet our expert guides who will be on hand to help you identify all of the waders you can see at Slimbridge. Guides will be stationed at the South Lake Discovery Hide, Peng Observatory and Zeiss Hide throughout the day. (Free with admission, no booking necessary).
Wader Carving Demonstrations - We're excited to be welcoming Roger Francis of Severn Wildlife Carvers to the festival, to showcase his intricate wader artwork and offer an insight into how he creates his masterpieces, with demonstrations throughout Saturday and Sunday. High Tide Safari will replace the usual 11:30am Land Rover Safari. The 2pm session will continue as normal, bookable in the shop (weather permitting).
