Recent sightings - 15th May

The following sightings were recorded today by Toni Castello, warden, at low tide, and under a rainy, windy day, which is keeping the most of the birds quiet, and looking for sheltered spots.

Estuary

Black-tailed godwit 17, Little egret 1, Black-headed gull +50.

Main lake - visible from Sensory garden and Visitor centre

Shelduck 2, Tufted duck 4, Black-headed gull 500.

Wadermarsh - visible from Wadermarsh lookout and Brent Hide

Canada geese 9, Shelduck 2, Black-headed gull 7, Greylag 1.

Freshwater Lagoon - visible from Brent Hide and Crannog

Gadwall 1, Mallard 2, Tufted duck 16, Mute swan 2, Black-headed gull +350.

Saline Lagoon - visible from the Saline Lagoon lookout and Limekiln observatory

Black-headed gull 22, Tufted duck 2. Up to six Common tern are being very constant in this lagoon since three weeks ago. Last week we launched a tern raft, in order to encourage them to nest on it, avoiding the potential competition from the Black-headed gulls. Yesterday in the afternoon we got the first tern sitting on the raft, which seems a very good beginning!!

Limestone Lake - Visible from the Limestone Pavillion and the Woodland lookout

Tufted duck 2. The kingfisher has been fishing in this lake during the last two days.

Peninsula Marsh - Visible from the Peninsula Marsh lookout

Reed bunting 1. The Sedge warbler has been spotted again several times during the last few days.
