Severn Wader Festival day 2

The second day of the Severn Wader Festival got underway with a Bird Watch Morning event receiving excellent views of Snipe and Ruff from the Hogarth Hide, so close it was almost like the birds knew they were on show.  The two juvenile Spotted Redshank continued their tour of the reserve, popping up at most of the hides.  High tide saw a packed Zeiss Hide with the flock of Dunlin and Ringed Plover dropping in but sadly no Curlew Sandpiper from yesterday.

As with yesterday there were also a few unexpected non-wader treats including the second Osprey of the weekend which was briefly seen sitting out on the mudflats of the river.  High tide also brought at least 4 Arctic Terns to the river bank.  A first calendar year Mediterranean Gull was on the South Lake amongst the Black-headed Gulls.

So we end the weekend on 14 species of wader: Black-tailed Godwit, Lapwing, Redshank, Ruff, Spotted Redshank, Snipe, Green Sandpiper, Little Stint, Curlew Sandpiper, Dunlin, Ringed Plover, Curlew, Whimbrel and Knot.

So far this month we have recorded 23 species of wader on the reserve, those recorded this weekend plus: Oystercatcher, Avocet, Golden Plover, Turnstone, Little-ringed Plover, Sanderling, Common Sandpiper Greenshank and Wood Sandpiper.
