Monday highlights

A family of Whooper Swans seemed to have roosted here as they left the site early morning, it's likely to be the same birds that were reported over at Walmore Common by A. Jayne yesterday, the sites are known to exchange birds regularly. Another two swans were briefly on the Top New Piece before flying off to the south, these were likely to be Whooper Swans.

Rushy Pen

A dawn count revealed over 1400 birds including Pochard 115 (28 females), 295 Tufted Duck, 123 Shelduck, 103 Pintail, 4 Bewick's Swan, 248 Mallard and a Little Grebe. A Little Stint spent the day feeding on the islands with a Redshank.

South Lake

70 Dunlin, a Little Stint, 30 Shoveler, 3 Snipe and 12 Pochard among the birds seen here today.

Zeiss Hide

Large numbers of waders and wildfowl including 800+ Wigeon, Little Stint, 687 Dunlin, 12+ Ruff and 70 Black-tailed Godwit. 30 Snipe were seen in the rushy areas.

Kingfisher Hide

The E. White-fronted Geese fed in the long grass among the Greylags and Barnacle Geese. 23 Curlew, the mobile flock of Ruff and hundreds of Golden Plover and Lapwing also favoured this area.
