Coldest night of the winter

Above- European White-fronted Geese over the Severn

The cold night (-4) caused most of our wetlands to freeze, only the Rushy Pen and South Lake remained open partly due to the large numbers of birds moving about. A few other spots with a water flow remained clear and offered somewhere to sit it out. Many of the birds moved out to the Severn or fed in the fields north of the Tack Piece.

47 E. White-fronted Geese were seen in the Tack Piece this morning with another 5 in the Bottom New Piece from the Kingfisher Hide. A party of 5 Greylag and 10 Golden Plover accompanied the latter birds. 53 Bewick's Swans were present today including Croupier, this bird is 26 years old.

Two Little Stint were seen on the South Lake yesterday with another on the Rushy Pen, no news on them today but Lapwing and Dunlin were present at both sites today.
