More Swans and Geese

Some good clear weather and northerly winds have allowed a few more Bewicks Swans and Whitefronted Geese to arrive.

Rushy

At least 28 Bewicks here this morning joining the 120 Pochard and around 60 Pintail. The Little Stint was on the muddy island in the center of the pond at 08.00 and one or two are likely to be seen here through the day. Nice to see the Little Grebe here again.

Holden Tower and Walkway hides

Lots of Greylag, Canada and Barnacle Geese which were joined by 31 Whitefronts coming in from the south. They landed close to the Stephen Kirk Hide giving excellent view in the bright sunshine. Nearly 600 Wigeon and 200 Teal were using the ice free water in front of the Robbie Garnet Hide. There were 2 Cranes and a dozen Curlew out in the field. A Peregrine was seen distantly out on the estuary and a Mistle Thrush on the Mistletoe just south ofthe Holden. Two Reed Buntings were showing well in front of the hide. A Water Rail and Great Spotted Woodpecker were among the Tits and Sparrows at the Willow Hide feeding station.

Zeiss Hide

Frozen hard here but still 200 Wigeon and 200 Teal on the main flash that has remained open. Single Black Tailed Godwit and Ruff were with them.

South Lake

The main lake looks great in the sunshine with a very mixed flock of ducks including 120 Pochard 220 Tufted Duck, 200 Teal and smaller numbers of Pintail, Gadwall and Shoveler. A tight group of 28 Black tailed Godwits were sleeping only a few meters in front of the hide and around 350 Dunlin were waiting for the ice to melt.
