Raptor Fest

A murky start on Saturday clearing later on.

Another good raptor day with at least 7 Marsh Harrier on the reserve. A couple of sightings of Merlin in the morning at least, 5+ Buzzard, 2 Kestrel, Peregrine and Sparrowhawk. Roosting Tawny Owl near the Kingfisher Hide and another bird roosting near the Janet Kear Hide. Barn Owl hunting from 15:40 onward.

Belated news for the year list as 2 Ringed Plover arrived on Thursday. Over 1000 Lapwing present, 100+ Ruff, 15+ Oystercatcher, 6 Black-tailed Godwit, 2 Redshank and 10+ Snipe.

Overcast but no shortage of wildfowl this afternoon.

More Pink-footed Geese on the move, no roost counts here but keep looking through any flocks arriving on the reserve. See previous sighting for the wildfowl list and counts.

Plenty of Reed Bunting visiting the feeding stations. Minimum 30 Tree Sparrow by the Kingfisher Hide, Goldcrest in that area too. At least 50 Stock Dove present.

If you are visiting Martin Mere for the first time and would like to know what is around and the best areas to see specific species do call in at the in focus shop, next to the Discovery Hide which over looks the Mere. It should be possible to see over 60 species in a day without too much difficulty.
