Swans and their Cygnets

Millennium Wetlands

This week saw a duck count on the Millennium Wetlands to be 8 Gadwall, 1 Pochard, 21 Mallard, 2 Tufted Duck and 3 Shelduck. Also on the water has been 3 Little Egret, 5 Little Grebe, 1 Grey Heron and c.100 Black-Tailed Godwits. Also, c.80 Black Headed Gull were counted and 4 Greylag Geese and 2 Moorhen. On the reserve there has been 4 Long-Tailed Tit, 16 Goldfinch, 2 Blackcap, 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 5 Chiffchaff. Furthermore, 2 Reed Warbler, 1 Sedge Warbler, 2 Bullfinch, 1 Cetti's Warbler, 2 Whitethroat and 1 Reed Bunting were included in this weeks counts. As well as the 6 Swan Cygnets near the Lilly Pond, 3 new young have been seen on the Eastern Scrapes where our other pair nested.

British Steel Hide

Out on the Saline Lagoon 3 Juvenile Grey Heron as well as 1 adult were in the area. There was also 4 Little Egret, 1 Spoonbill and a Sparrowhawk. There were roughly c.20 Sand Martins feeding on the marsh as well as 69 Black-Headed Gull, 5 Shelduck, 4 Greylag Geese, 2 Herring Gull and 4 Lesser Black-Backed Gull.

On the Dafen scrapes 10 Lapwing, 8 Greylag Geese, 34 Black Headed Gull and 1 juvenile Shelduck were counted on 13th. There was also 1 Swallow, 5 Blackbird, 2 Pied Wagtail, 2 Herring Gull and 1 Grey Heron.

Other Wildlife

On the 12th a White-Letter Hairstreak was seen within the wildflower meadows that lead to the Heron's Wing Hide, although its main habitat is in the surrounding Elm trees where they seen on Aphid honeydew.
