Eel in a Puddle

Rather strange start to the morning with Reserve Manager Joe Bilous discovering an eel in one of the puddles down the Avenue. This was safely caught and placed in the Teal Pond, a location in which we have recorded them in the past. Another unusual sighting was the presence of a juvenile Great Spotted Woodpecker on one of the fence posts out on the merse. We know from time spent out on the Merses undertaking fencing repairs that there are plenty of insects associated with these posts, particularly Ladybirds. The Swallows are still very active around Saltcot Merse Observatory with some nests containing chicks. We have kept our Teal Pond Hide closed at present as one pair of Swallows is trying for a late brood and has only just laid eggs!

The Pasture Pathway remains closed. The Meadow and River Walks are now closed for the Season.
