Sunny Sedum Attracts the Butterflies

The good weather recently has really drawn in the late flying butterflies such as Red Admiral and Small Tortoiseshell into the Wildlife Garden. Not only is the Sedum (recently renamed as Hylotelephium and otherwise known as Iceplant) proving a valuable late season nectar source but also the stalwart of the garden, Joe Pye Weed. The Barnacle Goose numbers have jumped up to 68 as of this morning's count. For the first couple of days they were very much Merse based and best seen from the Saltcot Merse Observatory. Today they have started to drift inland looking for foraging areas and have been investigating some of the fields on and near to the reserve. Listen out for them flying overhead, they sound a bit like yapping terriers!

The Pasture Pathway, Meadow and River Walks are now all closed for the season.
