Woodland walks

The woodland walk is a seasonal haven.

Enjoying the autumn colours, viewing the wild birds arriving in winter when the trees have shed their leaves and witnessing the hive of activity in and around the nest boxes in spring.

A walk through the woodland and ‘The Swamp’ is an enjoyable experience to undertake as part of your day out at Castle Espie whatever the time of year.

The Sustainability Trail

A key goal of ecological design is to create buidlings that work in harmony with the natural environment around them. Our visitor centre and limekiln observatory are great examples - nature has helped inspire their shape, the materials they are made from, and the way they function.

The sustainability trail has been created to guide you around the reserve highlighting the buidlings and the facilities that demonstrate ecological design. There is a leaflet available from the reception desk that provides further information about each of the 15 locations on the trail.

The trail takes you from the building, around the wetland treatment system and through to the Crannog, Limekiln Observatory, composting toilet, finishing by the wetland treatment system.
