At Washington Wetland Centre we’re here for you and for wildlife 364 days a year (*), so don’t let a little thing like the weather put you off spending a day in the great outdoors. Fling on a coat, grab your wellies and head out for a winter adventure…
Wetlands are incredible spaces teeming with wildlife all year round. Visit us this season and you’ll be amazed to discover that while a lot of animals do leave or nod off in the colder months, there’s still a lot that’s wide awake!
Come and meet iconic wetland species including our flamboyant Chilean flamingos and cheeky Asian short-clawed otter family. Discover more about them during daily talks from 11.30am and 3pm and find out how WWT is working to save them.
Hand-feed our characterful ducks, geese and swans or take a wintry walk amid stunning scenery. Seasonal wildlife spectaculars include flocks of curlew, lapwing and teal on Wader Lake and colourful woodland birds gathering at Hawthorn Wood feeding station. Learn more about the current highlights on a guided warden walk held the third Saturday and fourth Sunday of each month – just meet in the picture window at reception at 11am.
And once your wildlife-watching is done, get warmed up again with family crafts from 1-3.30pm every weekend in December (small costs apply) or tuck into a two-course festive lunch in the cosy surroundings of waterside cafe with views of beautiful Eurasian cranes and barnacle geese.
Our site has excellent access (with free electric scooter hire) and full visitor centre facilities including a well-stocked gift shop – ideal for those with wildlife fans to buy for this Christmas!
