The Big Hideout

Calling all budding birdwatchers!

This half term, kids are taking over our bird hides.

Borrow a pair of binoculars or get crafty and make your own. Discover the wild birds that live in our wetlands – and how to tell them apart. And let your imagination soar with our bird-themed activities.

Whether you’re a beginner with binoculars or a seasoned spotter, it’s the perfect time to step into our hides and discover something new.

The Big Hideout’s big activities:

Everyday

  • Pick up a Spotter's winter guide to wetland birds and tick off the birds you can find during your day. These are included in our backpacks for younger explorers, or as a handout for more mature explorers.
  • Spend some time in our pond room
    • Spot birds on the feeders with a guide
    • Feed the birds - create a bird feeder of your own to take home or make a sunflower planter to grow bird food for the future
    • Get crafty - make an origami swan, a Bewick's swan hat or a handprint duck
  • Step inside our main hide
    • Spot birds out on the water with a guide
    • Enjoy a commentated swan feed - daily 12noon and 3.30pm
