The story so far from Caerlaverock...

Barnacle geese numbers were up to 6,000 on 8 October, lower than last year due to the south westerly winds holding them back on the Norwegian coast but another 25-30,000 are due soon.

The first whooper swans arrived earlier than before on 15 September, but moved through a few days later taking advantage of the winds from hurricane Katia. On 6 October, 14 more arrived, which has now become 30.

We also have 500 wigeon, 500 teal, 40 shoveler, 30 tufted, 900 pintail and 1,400 shelduck.

Waders have arrived, including 52 black-tailed godwits, 1,500 golden plover, 150 grey plover, 36 ruff, 7- bar-tailed godwit, 4 curlew sandpiper, 1 little stint, 2 spotted redshank 1 long-billed dowitcher (an American wader probably blown over the Atlantic on strong westerly winds.)
