July update
Our Summer of Saltmarsh events are well underway and the tower hide has had a revamp
Summer has arrived and our calendar is full of exciting events...
We've had a busy couple of months at Steart with the beginning of a special Summer of Saltmarsh events, made possible through our Connecting Coastal Communities project. This project is funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and creates an opportunity for us to host a variety of creative and thought-provoking workshop and events.
Dragonfly Day was on Sunday 7th June, where we celebrated the reserve as a Dragonfly Hotspot, with walks and talks, wildlife stalls and an array of art workshops around the reserve. We even hosted a rap workshop with Nature Voices rap artist Martin Shiells! You can find our fantastic (and informative!) saltmarsh rap on our socials here! Thanks to Combwich Crafters, Alison Jacobs and Blossom in Somerset for the great nature display still on view in the Mendip Hide.
We then celebrated Saltmarsh Day on the 11th June, with a thank you event for our volunteer team – featuring a saltmarsh walk and samphire scones foraged from Steart and created by Sarah Scone Mad!
Local artist Jackie Curtis hosted an excellent monoprint workshop on the 20th June, using the saltmarsh views, plants, and wildlife to inspire some beautiful artwork. She will be running a second workshop on Tues September 15th for those of you who missed out, we fully recommend joining!

And there’s still plenty to come! Throughout the summer holidays artists will be running workshops - another great opportunity to get creative with the family. All events can be found and booked on our website Events page - don’t miss out on this unique summer at Steart…
Sunday 2nd August – Tower Hide walk to celebrate 10 years of the coast path in Somerset
Saturday 8th August – Sketching the marsh: A creative nature walk
Tuesday 18th August – Saltmarsh panorama drawing workshop
Tuesday 8th September – Gather & make: seasonal paper-cut workshop

In other news, our Tower Hide has had a revamp with some brilliant new artwork by local artist Alison Jacobs. The hide now features a compass indicating distances to nearby landmarks, and a mural of the inspiring landscape seen from this spot.
We also still have a few places on our introduction to saltmarsh courses – email nicole.turnbull@wwt.org.uk for details.
