Winter brings its own special beauty to wetlands as well as a rich and unique soundscape. While some animals are hibernating, sightings of kingfishers are more common in December and January. This time of year can be hard on species and wetlands are a lifeline, providing food, water and habitat.
What’s more, as carbon stores and natural flood defenders, they are one of our best protectors against climate change and its disastrous effects. And yet, wetlands are disappearing three times faster than forests – 35% have disappeared since 1970.
