Dragonfly Weekend

Join us on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th August 2025 to discover the secret world of dragonflies!

Recognised as a dragonfly hotspot by the British Dragonfly Society, WWT Steart Marshes is home to 23 species of dragonfly. Join us to celebrate these wonderful insects and take part in family-friendly activities such as pond dipping, expert walks and talks, art and crafts, and more!
Activities
Dragonfly Talk (11am - 12.30pm) - With dragonfly expert and Somerset County Recorder, Jon Van Gowler. Learn about the species you may encounter and their lifecycle and habitat preferences. Booking required - book here.
Family Dragonfly Walk (1.30pm - 2.30pm) - With Somerset Joint County Dragonfly Recorders Jon Van Gowler and Chris Cardno. Booking required - book here.
Pond Dipping - Join us at the dipping platform below the Mendip Hide.
Art - Dragonfly-inspired art installations will be created and displayed around the reserve by a group of local artists, coordinated by artist Alison Jacobs.
Crafts and Trails - Make your own dragonfly art or pick up dragonfly spotter and challenge sheets and go on an adventure around the reserve.
Willow Weaving - Create a willow dragonfly.
Science Area - Dive into the close-up world of dragonflies.
Local Stalls - Chat to groups such as the Recorders of the Avalon Marshes (RoAM), Quantock Landscape Partnership Scheme, Somerset Moth Group (Sunday), Somerset Badger Group (Saturday), Quantock Beekeepers Association and more.
Refreshments/Street Food - Daisy Fresh Kitchen on Saturday 9th and Budapest Street Kitchen (classic langos with a twist from Hungary) on Sunday 10th.
