Meet our otter

Watch him going for swims, rolling around in mud, juggling pebbles on his tummy and greeting the public with squeaky cries. Buster our Asian short-clawed otter is full of personality and charm.

About Asian short-clawed otters

Asian short‑clawed otters are the smallest of all 13 otter species and are classed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, facing threats from poaching, illegal trafficking for the pet trade, pollution and habitat loss. Seeing them up close at Washington is a brilliant reminder of why conservation work matters and why this species needs our support.

Buster the Asian short-clawed otter

Buster is our playful Asian short-clawed otter here at WWT Washington, always ready to charm visitors with his energetic nature and love of a small, smooth pebble.

Born in 2017, Buster is confident, curious and full of character. Whether he's exploring his habitat, rolling in the mud, searching for treats or showing off his pebble-juggling skills, there's always something fascinating to watch. His bright personality and playful behaviour make him a real highlight for visitors.

Until recently he shared his enclosure with his dad Musa, due to old age and a short illness Musa passed away in October 2026. Read our tribute to Musa.

Otter talks

Our otter talks run at 11.30am and 2.30pm*. They're a great chance to see Buster enjoy his tasty treats and habitat, learn how WWT is helping otters in the wild and chat to his keeper. It's a lovely moment to experience on your visit and a perfect reason to come and meet him in person.

*Otter Talks run on the days the centre is open, please see our seasonal opening times for more information.
