Water Pipits feeding on the marsh

As well as Water Pipit there's calling Water Rail, Bittern, Snipe and Shelduck out on the reserve this morning

1 Bittern - reservoir lagoon

6 Snipe - scrape, marsh

2 Water pipit - marsh

13 Redwing - wildside

1 Kestrel - over the overflow car park

3 Shelduck - main lake, scrape

5 Water Rail - reedbed, south route, wildside

January bird highlights: Jack Snipe, Brent Goose, Bittern, Goldeneye, Yellow-legged Gull, Water Rail, Water Pipit, Siskin, Chiffchaff. Colour-ringed gulls recorded recently include a Norwegian Common Gull and a Danish Black-headed Gull.


Early flowering plants: Marsh Marigold, Cowslip, Ragwort, Daisy, Winter Aconite, Snowdrop, Hazel.

Insects: (early January) Buff-tailed Bumblebee, Red Admiral.
