Dragonfly Festival at WWT Caerlaverock
Dragonflies play an important role in our wetland ecosystems, making summer the perfect time to celebrate these fascinating creatures with WWT’s Dragonfly Festival.
A designated 'dragonfly hotspot'
Set in Dumfriesshire, Scotland, visit this stunning wetland landscape to discover these incredible winged insects among ponds, reeds and wildflower-filled waterways.
Thanks to the amazing diversity of habitats across our 1,400 acre reserve, WWT Caerlaverock is officially recognised by the British Dragonfly Society as a designated ‘dragonfly hotspot’, meaning it is one of the best places in the UK to spot these amazing aerial predators in the warmer months.
What’s on at the Dragonfly Festival
Pick up a dragonfly spotter sheet to identify different species as you explore the reserve on foot. Best places to spot dragonflies are at the Teal Pond, entrance to Summer Meadow Trail and outside the Avenue Tower.
Family activities and experiences
Families can also enjoy hands-on, self-guided ponding dipping in the courtyard, uncovering the hidden underwater world of dragonfly nymphs and other wetland wildlife living below the surface.
Macro photography Exhibition
Don’t miss the breath-taking outdoor macro photography exhibition by renowned wildlife and landscape photographer Andrew Fusek Peters, capturing the intricate beauty of dragonflies up close.
